What Should a Cadet Pilot Do While Waiting for an Airline Joining?

What Should a Cadet Pilot Do While Waiting for an Airline Joining?

Turn your waiting period into an opportunity! Learn how to stay productive and enhance your skills while preparing for your airline career.

"The sky is not the limit; it's just the beginning. Use every moment on the ground to prepare, so you can soar with confidence when your time in the air arrives."

Many cadet pilots dream of flying a jet airliner immediately after completing their training. However, due to the limited training capacity of airlines, the reality is that many cadets end up waiting for months—sometimes even up to two years—before getting their release for line operations.

This waiting period can feel unproductive, but instead of staying idle, you can use this time to enhance your skills and prepare yourself for a smooth transition into airline operations. Here are some meaningful ways to utilize this waiting period effectively:

1) Enhance Your Aircraft-Specific Knowledge

While waiting for your joining call, invest time in familiarizing yourself with your assigned aircraft. Many newly trained pilots take time to adjust to the cockpit environment, so the more you familiarize yourself beforehand, the more confident you'll be when stepping into the actual aircraft.

This can include:

  • Spending time in a simulator (if accessible).
  • Studying the cockpit layout through posters or virtual cockpit apps.
  • Memorizing switch positions, flows, and aircraft systems so that you feel at home in the cockpit from day one.

2) Watch Aviation Incident & Accident Investigations

Watching Air Crash Investigation documentaries and analyzing real-world incidents helps develop situational awareness and decision-making skills. These investigations highlight not just the crash itself but the chain of events leading to it, offering valuable lessons in:

  • Recognizing early warning signs of issues.
  • Understanding human factors and errors that lead to incidents.
  • Applying best practices in abnormal situations.

3) Study Operational Case Studies from Seniors

If you're joining a specific airline (e.g., IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet), reach out to senior pilots or instructors from the airline and ask for case studies which airline shares time to time to their line pilots

  • Airlines often document real operational errors and best practices for their pilots.
  • Learning from small, repeated mistakes made by other pilots prepares you for real-world challenges.
  • While extreme failures (engine failure, dual hydraulic loss, etc.) are rare, minor operational challenges occur daily—knowing how to handle them gives you an advantage in line operations.

4) Understand Your Airline’s SOPs and Culture

Every airline has Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and a unique working culture. While waiting, take time to:

  • Read the airline’s SOPs, FCOM (Flight Crew Operating Manual), and MEL (Minimum Equipment List).
  • Understand how the airline operates its flights, including dispatch procedures, ATC interactions, and fuel policies.
  • Learn about the company’s hierarchy, communication protocols, and CRM (Crew Resource Management).

Doing this before your line training will allow you to focus more on flying the aircraft rather than struggling with theoretical learning during a busy schedule.

5) Learn Flight Planning, Paperwork, and Weather Interpretation

During your supernumerary (jump seat) flights, you’ll have the opportunity to observe and learn, but if you start studying these topics early, you can:

  • Understand flight plans, NOTAMs, METARs, and TAFs before your actual training.
  • Get comfortable with weight & balance calculations and fuel planning.
  • Use supernumerary flights to observe practical applications rather than trying to decode paperwork for the first time.

6) Work on Your Soft Skills

Technical knowledge is essential, but your soft skills play a crucial role in your career as a pilot. Use your waiting time to improve:

  • Communication skills – Clear and concise communication with ATC and crew.
  • Decision-making skills – Learning from real-world case studies helps in practical decision-making.
  • Situational awareness – Stay updated with global aviation incidents and safety lessons.
  • CRM (Crew Resource Management) – Understanding how to work efficiently with crew members.

7) Prioritize Mental and Physical Well-Being

The demanding nature of an airline pilot’s job requires not just technical expertise but also mental resilience and physical fitness. Use the waiting period to build habits that will support your health and well-being in the long run:

  • Stay Physically Active: Regular exercise, such as cardio, strength training, or yoga, can improve your stamina and reduce stress.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Techniques like meditation or deep breathing can help you stay calm and focused during high-pressure situations.
  • Maintain a Healthy Diet: Proper nutrition fuels your body and mind, ensuring you’re always at your best.
  • Get Adequate Sleep: Cultivate good sleep habits to ensure you’re well-rested and alert during flights.

Final Thoughts

The waiting period before joining an airline can feel long, but it is an opportunity to prepare yourself for the real world of airline flying. Instead of feeling stuck, use this time to become more knowledgeable, skilled, and confident so that when the call finally comes, you’re more than ready to take flight.
