RTR for DGCA CPL Ground Classes – Complete Guide to Best DGCA Ground Classes in India

RTR (Radio Telephony Restricted) is the only DGCA certification that directly evaluates how you speak, listen, and respond as a pilot. It is not about theory marks alone — it tests your ability to communicate clearly, correctly, and confidently with ATC under real operational pressure.

What Is RTR in DGCA Ground Classes?

RTR is a mandatory certification authorising pilots to use aeronautical radio communication. It is conducted under the Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing (WPC), Ministry of Communications, Government of India.

No RTR clearance = No CPL issue, regardless of flying hours.

Why DGCA Takes RTR Seriously

DGCA evaluates standard ICAO phraseology, correct readbacks, and communication discipline — not casual English.

Why Airlines Care About RTR

Airlines expect pilots to be ATC-ready from day one. Communication errors are a known safety risk.

RTR Examination Structure

1. Written Examination (Objective)

  • Conducted by WPC
  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Focus on rules, procedures & communication standards

2. Oral / Viva Voce Examination

  • One-to-one interaction with examiner
  • Real-time ATC–Pilot role play
  • Stress & situation-based testing
  • Most critical part of RTR

Detailed RTR (Aero) Syllabus

1. Fundamentals of Aeronautical Radio

  • Purpose of aviation radio communication
  • Importance of standard phraseology
  • Types of aeronautical communication
  • VHF principles & line-of-sight limitation
  • Aviation frequency band overview

2. Radio Regulations & Licensing

  • Role of WPC authority
  • Licensing requirements
  • Validity & scope of RTR
  • Responsibilities of radio operator

3. ICAO Phonetic Alphabet & Pronunciation

  • Complete ICAO alphabet
  • Correct pronunciation standards
  • Use in call signs
  • Avoiding ambiguity

4. Numbers, Time & Altitude Reporting

  • Pronunciation of numbers
  • Flight level & altitude reporting
  • UTC time format
  • Use of “decimal”, “hundred”, “thousand”

5. Standard ICAO Phraseology (Core)

  • Taxi & takeoff requests
  • Climb / descend instructions
  • Heading, speed, level changes
  • Correct readback & correction

6. ATC Clearances & Readbacks

  • Mandatory readback items
  • Conditional clearances
  • Holding instructions
  • Frequency changes

7. Distress & Urgency Communication

  • MAYDAY procedure
  • PAN-PAN procedure
  • Distress message structure
  • Radio silence rules

8. Listening & Situational Response

  • Clearance interpretation
  • Responding under pressure
  • Avoiding assumption-based replies

What Actually Decides RTR Success?

Examiners evaluate composure, discipline, phraseology accuracy, and complete readbacks — not accent. Most failures happen due to lack of structured mock practice, not lack of English ability.

What Examiners Look for in RTR Oral

Parameter Expectation
Clarity Clear, confident voice
Accuracy Correct ICAO phraseology
Composure Calm under pressure
Readback Complete & correct

Capt. Awdhesh Tomar

Capt. Awdhesh Tomar

Director & Founder | A320 Commander

When you sit with Capt. Tomar for counselling, it doesn’t feel like a formal session. It feels like talking to someone who has already walked the path you’re trying to understand. He knows how confusing the beginning can be — medicals, DGCA Computer Number, ground classes, flying school choices, budgets — everything feels overwhelming at first. He speaks honestly. If something is risky, he will tell you. If something is unnecessary, he will explain why. There are no big promises or shortcuts — just practical guidance based on real experience in aviation. The focus is simple: help you make the right decision from day one. Because one wrong step in pilot training can cost time and money. Capt. Tomar makes sure you understand the process clearly before you move ahead.

Capt. Deval Soni

Capt. Deval Soni

Director & Founder | A-320 Commander

Counselling with Capt. Deval Soni is deeply personal, because his journey into aviation was never smooth or handed to him easily. He understands the confusion, the financial pressure, the fear of making the wrong decision, and the emotional stress that comes with chasing a cockpit dream. He has lived that uncertainty himself. During counselling, he does not simply explain the process — he shares perspective. From medicals and DGCA Computer Number to ground school strategy, flight training choices, budget planning, and airline preparation, everything is discussed honestly. When you speak to Capt. Deval, you are not talking to a counsellor — you are talking to someone who once sat exactly where you are sitting now.
