Overview - Jimmy Doolittle

Jimmy Doolittle was one of the most celebrated pilots in history and a Medal of Honor recipient. He was born in Alameda, California in 1896 and began his aviation career in 1912 at the age of 16. After graduating from the University of California with a degree in chemical engineering, Doolittle joined the Army Air Corps in 1917 and began his pilot training.
Doolittle was a highly skilled and experienced pilot who quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the commander of several air bases and winning numerous awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1941, he was selected to lead the daring raid against Tokyo, which he successfully completed in April of 1942.
His courageous leadership during the raid earned him the Medal of Honor, and he was subsequently promoted to the rank of brigadier general. After the war, Doolittle returned to civilian life and served as an executive for Standard Oil of California.
Throughout his career, Doolittle held a variety of different pilot positions, including military, airline, and commercial pilot. As a military pilot, he flew bombers and fighters in both the World Wars and served in key leadership positions in the Air Corps. As an airline pilot, he flew commercial and cargo flights for several airlines including United Airlines and TWA.
He also became a highly accomplished aircraft pilot, setting numerous speed and altitude records, many of which remain unbroken to this day.
Throughout his life, Doolittle was an inspiration to other pilots, as evidenced by the fact that the airfield at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida is named after him. His legacy is remembered today, not only as an outstanding pilot and leader, but also as a champion of aviation and a true American hero.

This raid, known as the Doolittle Raid, was a daring mission that saw 16 B-25 bombers take off from an aircraft carrier and hit their targets in Tokyo. The mission was successful and Doolittle was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for his leadership in the raid. He was later promoted to Lieutenant General and continued to serve in the Air Force until his retirement in 1959.
