An Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) is a professional license issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). It is required for any individual who wishes to become a commercial airline pilot in India. The ATPL is the highest license available for pilots and is the most sought-after by aspiring pilots.
The ATPL is designed to provide a standard of pilot training and testing that meets international standards. The license is divided into three classes: Class I, Class II, and Class III. Each class builds upon the skills and knowledge of the previous class.
Class I ATPL requires a minimum of 250 hours of flight time and includes a written exam. This class allows the pilot to operate as the pilot in command (PIC) of a multi-engine aircraft carrying passengers. The pilot must also complete a Flight Instructor Rating (FIR) to be eligible for a Class I ATPL.
Class II ATPL requires a minimum of 500 hours of flight time and includes a written exam. The pilot must complete both the FIR and a multi-engine Instrument Rating (IR) to be eligible for a Class II ATPL. This class allows the pilot to operate as the PIC of a multi-engine aircraft carrying passengers and cargo.
Class III ATPL requires a minimum of 750 hours of flight time and includes a written exam. The pilot must complete both the FIR and the IR, as well as a multi-engine Type Rating (TR) to be eligible for a Class III ATPL. This class allows the pilot to operate as the PIC of a multi-engine aircraft carrying passengers and cargo on international routes.
In addition to the required flight time and exams, all ATPL applicants must also pass a physical examination and an instrument rating practical exam. The physical exam is conducted by a DGCA-approved doctor and is designed to ensure the pilot is physically fit to fly. The instrument rating practical exam is conducted by a DGCA-approved examiner and is designed to assess the pilot’s knowledge and proficiency with the aircraft’s instruments.
Once all the requirements have been met, the pilot must submit a completed application to the DGCA for review. The DGCA will then issue an ATPL if all the requirements have been met. The ATPL is valid for a period of 5 years and must be renewed every 5 years in order for the pilot to remain eligible to fly.
The ATPL is an essential requirement for any aspiring commercial airline pilot in India and is essential for anyone who wants to pursue a career in the aviation industry. The ATPL provides a standard of training and assessment that meets international standards and is designed to ensure that pilots are qualified and competent to fly commercial aircraft safely and efficiently.
