Yuri Gagarin was the first human to travel into space, making history when his Vostok 1 spacecraft blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in 1961. Gagarin’s mission was part of the Soviet Union’s space exploration program, and his flight marked the start of the space race.
Gagarin was born in the village of Klushino, Russia in 1934. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a milkmaid. Gagarin attended school until ninth grade, and at the age of 16 he joined the Soviet Air Force. After studying at the Orenburg Military Aviation School, Gagarin became a military pilot in 1957.
In 1960, Gagarin was chosen to be part of the Soviet cosmonaut training program, along with 19 other candidates. Gagarin was selected to be the first human in space because of his small size and perfect physical condition. On April 12, 1961, Gagarin’s Vostok 1 spacecraft was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The spacecraft orbited the Earth once in a 108-minute flight, and Gagarin became the first human to view Earth from space.

His courage and commitment to exploration inspired generations of astronauts and cosmonauts to push the boundaries of space exploration. On April 12, 2021, the 60th anniversary of his flight, people around the world will commemorate Gagarin’s legacy and celebrate his remarkable achievement.
