Bessie Coleman

Bessie Coleman was an American aviation pioneer who overcame many odds to become the first African American female pilot. She was born in 1892 in Texas to parents who were former slaves. She was determined to pursue her dream of aviation, despite the obstacles she faced due to her race and gender. She was determined to get her pilot's license and went to France to study aviation, as there were no U.S. schools that would accept her. In 1921, she became the first African American woman to receive an international pilot's license. She became an inspiration for many African American women and was a symbol of strength and courage. After she returned to the United States, she performed in airshows and gave lectures to promote aviation to African Americans. She died in a plane crash in 1926. Her legacy lives on as a reminder of perseverance and ambition in the face of adversity.

Overview - Bessie Coleman

Bessie Coleman (1892-1926) was an American aviation pioneer and the first African American female pilot. She was born in Atlanta, Texas, and grew up in a small town in Oklahoma. Despite the limited opportunities for African Americans, she taught herself to read and write and eventually moved to Chicago to work as a manicurist.

Inspired by stories of World War I pilots, Coleman saved enough money to travel to France in 1920 to pursue her dream of becoming an aviator. In 1921, she became the first African American woman to earn an international pilot’s license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, making her the first licensed black female pilot.

Coleman made history in 1922, when she became the first African American woman to fly an airplane, and in 1923, when she became the first black woman to perform an aerial stunt. She toured the United States giving lectures and flight demonstrations, inspiring a generation of African American women to pursue aviation careers.

Coleman was determined to break racial and gender barriers in aviation, but faced many obstacles. Most aviation schools and programs did not accept African American students or women. To overcome this, she applied for and received a grant from the Robert S. Abbott Publishing Company and used the money to attend flight school.

Coleman also worked to open a school for African American pilots. She hoped to use her fame as a stunt pilot to raise enough money to open a school where African American pilots could receive the same quality of training as white pilots. Unfortunately, she was unable to find the necessary funding and her dream was never realized.

Despite the challenges, Coleman persevered, and her courage and determination inspired a generation of African American women to pursue pilot training and careers. She was a role model for other women of color and an example of what can be accomplished when you have the courage to follow your dreams.

Today, Coleman is remembered as a pioneer who blazed a trail for African American women in aviation. Her legacy lives on in the growing number of African American women pilots and the organizations that provide resources and support for aspiring pilots. Coleman’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of courage, determination, and perseverance.

The inspiring story of Bessie Coleman, the first African-American woman to become a licensed pilot, is a testament to human determination, perseverance and courage. Born on January 26, 1892 in Texas, Coleman was the tenth of thirteen children and the first to be born free since the Emancipation Proclamation. Growing up, she worked in cotton fields and attended school sporadically, always pushing herself to excel in education.

At the age of 23, Coleman moved to Chicago to live with her brothers and attended beauty school to pursue a career as a beautician. However, her dreams of becoming a pilot were ignited when she heard stories of the airmen fighting in World War I. Realizing that African Americans were denied the opportunity to become pilots in the United States, she set off for France in order to pursue her dream of flying.

In France, Coleman trained at the Caudron Brother’s School of Aviation and became the first African-American woman in the world to earn a pilot's license. She achieved this feat on June 15, 1921 and her license was issued by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, a French organization that was the first to issue such a license.

Upon returning to the United States, Coleman was met with disappointment as she found it difficult to find an employer willing to hire her. She was also denied membership in the American Aeronautic Society, which was an organization for white pilots. Despite these setbacks, she continued to pursue her dream of flying and made history as the first African-American woman to perform in an air show. Her courageous and daring aerobatics thrilled the crowds and earned her the title of “Brave Bessie”.

Coleman was a true trailblazer and an inspiration for black women and men alike. Her tenacity and perseverance paved the way for black pilots to achieve their dreams and she opened up new opportunities for African Americans in the field of aviation. Throughout her career, she also served as a role model for young people and spoke out against racism and discrimination.

Tragically, Coleman’s life was cut short when she died in a plane crash in 1926. She was only 34 years old at the time of her death. Although she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on through the many scholarships and awards that have been created in her honor.
