Commercial Pilot License

Commercial Pilot License is a type of License that permits the holder to act as Co-pilot and operate an aircraft for compensation. The Basic requirements to obtain the License and the privileges it confers are agreed upon internationally by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). However, the actual implementation varies quite widely from country to country. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to be eligible for CPL, applicant must have;

  • Be able to speak, read and write and understand English.

  • Have received required training in the areas of a Commercial Pilot.

  • Successfully complete the relevant written exams.

  • Possess valid Class 1 Medical Assessment.

Commercial Pilot License Eligibility

Commercial Pilots are those who are eligible to fly passengers from one place to another safely and efficiently for Commercial Airlines. The Eligibility requirements to become a Commercial Pilot in India are;

  • Your age should not be less than 17 years to begin training for CPL.

  • You must pass Class 12th standard with Mathematics, Physics and English.

  • If you are a non- science student, you may pursue the required subjects through the National Institute of Open Schooling.

  • You must have a valid DGCA Medical Certificate.

Commercial Pilot License Course Duration

Commercial Pilot License is an intense training program. Aspiring pilots need to undergo ground training, simulator training and flying training to obtain the CPL. CPL training course duration of 10-12 months includes academic sessions on the ground and 200 hours of flying training. This course offers 200 hours of flying training that includes dual/solo, general flying, circuit and landing sorties. Instruments and cross-country flights, skill tests, route checks and night flying rating are also included as per DGCA requirements.

  • Be able to speak, read and write and understand English.

  • Have received required training in the areas of a Commercial Pilot.

  • Successfully complete the relevant written exams.

  • Possess valid Class 1 Medical Assessment.

CPL Course Syllabus

Aspiring pilots need to undergo ground training, simulator training and flying training to obtain the CPL. There are various subjects that are covered in the CPL syllabus as per the DGCA requirements, with the main purpose on emphasizing the understanding of all the concepts.

Medical Requirements

For any Aspiring Pilots, Physical fitness is a mandatory pre-requisite for the issuance of Commercial Pilot License (CPL). All the Pilots must have an existing valid medical certificate, in order to fly an airplane legally. This medical certificate is obtained through medical examination conducted by DGCA approved doctors only.

There are two medical categories under DGCA:

DGCA Class-2 Medical

DGCA Class-1 Medical

Health Requirements for Commercial Pilots

Medical fitness has always been the most important aspect of a pilot’s life. If you are not medically fit as per governing authorities in your country, you cannot fly. Pilots are required to have the best of senses and physical capabilities to tackle every situation in flight for safe operation.  A pilot must possess a valid medical fitness certificate from an appropriate authority for the issuance of Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and to exercise the privileges of their respective flying licenses.

Commercial Pilot Flight Time Requirements

Becoming a Commercial Pilot requires intense training. CPL training course duration of 10-12 months includes academic sessions on the ground and 200 hours of flying training. The minimum Flight training requirements land down by the regulator are;

Board verification Certificate

This Certificate is one of the main requirements for the issuance of Computer Number. This certificate states that the marks mentioned in the marksheet are correct and doctored in any manner. This is issued by the respective education board. The process to obtain the certificate is different for different boards.

English Language Proficiency

All Airline Pilots must have a good command of English Language. Besides the airmanship and flying skills, English language is mandatory skill for an Airline Pilots.
