The Requirements for Becoming an Aircraft Pilot in India

Becoming an aircraft pilot in India requires a strong academic background, physical fitness and technical knowledge. After completing 12th in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) stream, aspiring pilots must appear for All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Candidates must also meet the minimum eligibility criteria set by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and obtain a Class-I Medical Certificate. After appearing for the entrance exam conducted by the National Cadet Corps (NCC), successful applicants must undertake a three-year pilot training program in an approved flying school. Training includes both theoretical and practical knowledge on aircraft operations, navigation, aircraft systems and flight regulations. Once the training is completed, pilots must appear for an interview to obtain a Commercial Pilot License (CPL). This license allows pilots to fly commercial aircraft and take on roles such as airline pilots, charter pilots and more. Pilots must also meet the necessary requirements for re-validation periodically.

in India
Becoming an aircraft pilot in India is an ambitious and rewarding career for many. The requirements for becoming an aircraft pilot in India post 12th PCB are stringent but achievable.
To become an aircraft pilot in India, one must qualify for the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). This licence is issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the government body responsible for regulating air travel in India. The CPL is a prerequisite for entering the field of professional aviation in India and the licence is awarded after successful completion of a prescribed training program.
The first step to becoming an aircraft pilot in India is to acquire the necessary qualifications. The minimum educational qualification required is a 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Those who do not have the required educational qualifications can opt for a Flying Club or Flying School program and obtain an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). This licence is recognised worldwide and is required for flying commercial aircraft.
Once the academic qualifications are in place, the aspiring pilot must undergo a rigorous medical examination to ensure that they are fit to fly. This comprehensive medical examination is conducted by a DGCA approved medical practitioner and is a mandatory requirement for obtaining a pilot’s licence.
The next step is to attend a ground school and obtain a Radio Telephony Licence (RTR). This licence is a prerequisite for any pilot and allows them to communicate with Air Traffic Control (ATC) and other aircraft pilots. After the medical and RTR have been obtained, the aspiring pilot must then attend a flying school or a Flying Club and obtain a minimum of 200 flying hours along with a Night Rating (NR).
After the required flying hours have been obtained, the aspiring pilot must then apply for the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). To obtain the CPL, the aspiring pilot must undergo a tough written examination and practical test. This examination evaluates the individual’s knowledge and skill in areas such as aircraft systems, navigation, meteorology and air regulations.
Once the written and practical tests have been successfully completed, the aspiring pilot must then undergo an aviation security training programme. This programme covers topics such as airport security, aviation security regulations and procedures, and aircraft security.
Once the above-mentioned requirements have been met, the aspiring pilot must then obtain a Multi-Engine Rating (MER). This rating is awarded after a suitable number of hours of flying a multi-engine aircraft and is a prerequisite for flying commercial aircraft. After the MER has been obtained, the aspiring pilot must then obtain an Instrument Rating (IR). This rating is required for flying in inclement weather conditions and is a prerequisite for flying commercial aircraft.
Finally, the aspiring pilot must also obtain a General Aviation Pilot Licence (GAPL). This licence is required for flying general aviation aircraft, such as private planes and helicopters.
The requirements for becoming an aircraft pilot in India post 12th PCB are stringent but achievable. If all these requirements are met, then an individual can go on to pursue a fulfilling and rewarding career as an aircraft pilot in India.
