In order to become a pilot, an individual must first obtain a pilot certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Depending on the type of pilot certificate, the number of required flight hours can vary greatly. For example, an airline pilot must have a minimum of 1,500 flight hours, while a recreational pilot needs only 25 flight hours.
